Barrels are very important to bourbon-making and are directly involved with one of the specific legal requirements for a whiskey to be classified as "bourbon": it must be aged in a new, charred oak barrel. Aging whiskey in a new, charred oak barrel for a number of years contributes to the overall flavor, color and smoothness of the bourbon. There are also just a few main commercial cooperages (barrel-making facilities) that feed the numerous distilleries, and they identify their barrels by stamping a pair of letters on the rivet heads on the hoops:
- BB = Brown-Forman Cooperage
- KY = Independent Stave Company (the KY location primarily makes bourbon barrels)
- LC = Bulleit/Stitzel-Weller Distillery
- MO = Independent Stave Company (the MO location primarily makes wine barrels)
